Effi Schleyen

Born 14th November 1958 in the city of Haifa, Israel.

Effi started training at the delicate teenage age of 14 years, prompt by the local self-defence system, he sought out other combat forms and eventually, sooner than later, recognized that his way in life was going to be in the pursue of karate. In 1980 he took up Shito Ryu Karate.

His first sensei’s we’re Isaac Florentine and Yossi Schechnovich. After both his sensei’s left to live in the USA, Tamas Weber Sensei (Sweden) took over as Effi’s guiding light of inspiration and knowledge in pursue of the way of karate.

A most outrageously dedicated student of karate, whom has built a bubble of emotionally questioning of principles, and when you put these principles into practice like Effi does, you will discover that it leads to some surprising conclusions. Perhaps then, like Effi you may see a rather unique perspective on things by way of karate and Kobudo training.

It was by chance that in 1999 when Sensei Vermiglio was in Chiba, one of his students witnessed a short demonstration of Ryukyu Kobudo. After initial introductions by both Sensei Vermiglio and Effi’s student, dialogue was created and Effi invited Sensei Vermiglio, along with Akamine Sensei and Kuniyoshi Sensei to Israel for an introductory seminar. This was where it all began, in 1999. It was always a passion, hidden deep inside, that one day Effi would walk the path, a path of tradition, just like his karate, and train in Ryukyu Kobudo.

Although different in many ways because of his unyielding commitment to pursuing the way, forever occupied, always going forward even when there is no apparent reason. In the midst of a world rapidly changing around him, his devotion and honesty towards his students, friends and family will always remain the same. A friendly ear, who listens but is not easily moved.

Finally, how would one summarize Effi? Or maybe we should just say, He sees: sees the karate and Kobudo world with a clear sight, sees it in a way that is not so obvious, even to the self-proclaimed masters of the arts, Or maybe we should just say, He is, and will be a source of truth. Effi is supported by his good wife Orna, along with his daughter Shir and son Oz, both are close to their farther and also practice martial arts.
