South Africa

This is what happened. Last year on the South African trip.

We where very busy showing of our skills at the South African JKA Association Dojo to all these to dog Karate-ka when we suddenly heard an interesting cracking noise. It went very quite and upon investigation found a very red faced Tim standing next to a very big wall mirror. Tim in his eagerness to help, did an oops and the result was a broken mirror. The local folks took it in stride and laughed it of as an every day occurrence. Any way we started this practice at sunrise and enjoyed a welcome breakfast after the practice, it was great.

There was an opportunity to send Fumiya Matayoshi to South Africa on a home stay and to help the folks tune their skills. Tim sent an Iai-to with as a token of friendship to the owners of the very expensive mirror. These are the photos of the presentation.

To be Shinbukan or to be Shibu

The Webmaster, an interesting item crossed my desk.

To whom,

This is my understanding of it based on conversations with Akamine Sensei.

Any dojo run by a licensed instructor with a dojo license is a Shibu. Of course there is nothing magical about that word it just means branch dojo.
That is branch of the system, and not necessarily branch of the Hombu. So for example Yonamine Sensei has some students that have licenses, and they may or could have Shibu.

Shinbukan is an option. It is the name of the Hombu. If you do the same Karate and same Kobudo then you may want to call your dojo a Shinbukan Dojo.
I will mine when I ever get around to opening one. But, I could just as easily call it by my last name (as in Kuniyoshi Dojo) or by location (as in Gibo Dojo), or by another name (as in the Kenshukaikan where Dell usually hangs out).

I hope that answers the question.

Regards,

Tim
