Interesse an Kobudo hatte ich schon lange. Seit nunmehr 15 Jahren praktiziere ich Karatedo (Uechiryu / Shoheiryu) und Aikido (Iwamaryu). Vom Aikido ist mir der Umgang mit Holzschwert (bokken) und -stab (jo) geläufig und die enge Verbindung von den Waffen zu den waffenlosen Techniken. Dennoch sollte es eine Weile dauern, bis ich meine ersten Kobudo-Schritte machte.

Erste Kontakte gab es bereits vor einigen Jahren auf Karatelehrgängen. Einer der Lehrer aus den USA (Brian Diamond) zeigte uns eine Bo-Kata, deren Namen und Ablauf ich mir allerdings nicht lange merken konnte. Später wurde Sensei Kyohide Shinjo aus Okinawa nach Deutschland von dem Kobudolehrer Masakazu Kinjo begleitet. Aber auch hier habe ich nicht viel behalten können. Vor etwa zwei Jahren begann ich in meinem morgendlichen privaten Frühtraining zusammen mit meinem Freund Michael Pophal, der seinerzeit gemeinsam mit mir Karate begonnen hat, neben Karate auch ein bisschen mit dem Bo zu üben. Michael hatte eine zeitlang in Nürnberg regelmäßig bei einem deutschen Karatelehrer am Kobudo-Unterricht teilgenommen. Aus diesen Kenntnissen gestalteten wir unsere morgendlichen Übungsstunden.

Als ich letztes Jahr bei meinem ersten Okinawa-Aufenthalt auch ein wenig Kobudo studieren wollte, musste ich schnell feststellen, dass dort einiges anders gemacht wurde, als ich es bisher gelernt hatte. Nach einer Kobudolektion bei Sensei Kosuke Yonamine, in der wir neben den Bo Kihon auch die Kata Shushi no kon sho übten, war ich von seiner Ausführung der Formen so beeindruckt, dass ich beschloss, wenn möglich in dieser Richtung weiterzuarbeiten.

Nach meiner Rückkehr nach Deutschland sollte es noch einmal fast ein Jahr dauern, bis ich durch einen glücklichen Zufall auf der Website von Sensei Dell Hamby die Ausschreibung zu einem Kobudolehrgang am anderen Ende von Deutschland (Straelen) fand. Sofort meldete ich mich an, und die Ausrichter kümmerten sich sehr gastfreundlich um eine private Unterkunft. Der Lehrgang war ideal für mich, da Dell Hamby Sensei sehr ausführlich auf die Grundlagen im Umgang mit Bo und Sai einging (Bo Kihon, Shushi-no-kon-sho, Sakugawa-no-kon-sho, Chikin-shitahaku-no-sai). Noch in Straelen verabredete ich mit ihm ein intensives verlängertes Trainingswochenende in Basel.

So fuhr ich also vom 6. bis 10.Juni dorthin und hatte Gelegenheit mit ihm und seinen Schülern fünf schweißtreibende Tage in seinem Dojo zu verbringen. Wir erarbeiteten das gesamte Shodanprogramm des Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinkokai und wiederholten alles, was er in Straelen gezeigt hatte. Ich bekam viele hilfreiche Korrekturen und Hinweise für mein weiteres Training daheim. Neben dem Kobudo gab es genügend Gelegenheiten für Sightseeing und ich konnte auch einen Aikidofreund besuchen, der in Basel ein Dojo leitet. Es waren ein paar unvergessliche Tage, und Dell wie auch seine Schüler, bei denen ich privat untergebracht war (Silvia, Roland und Thomas), erwiesen sich als super Gastgeber. Da komme ich doch gerne wieder. Vielen Dank euch allen!

Inzwischen übe ich regelmäßig in meinem Dojo weiter (mit Michael) und werde in Zukunft mehrmals im Jahr nach Basel fahren, um bei Dell zu lernen. Demnächst möchte ich auch offiziell Kobudo mit meinen Karateschülern praktizieren. Anfang Oktober werden wir ein erstes gemeinsames Karate und Kobudo Trainingswochenende mit Dell bei uns im Dojo organisieren. Nun wäre es schön, wenn der Rykyu Kobudo Hozon Shinkokai uns eine offizielle Anerkennung als Übungsgruppe unter der Supervision von Sensei Dell Hamby gibt.

A group of international instructors led by Yukio Kuniyoshi Shihan which included Emile and Penny van Heerden who are from SA but live in Okinawa, Tim Jurgens, from the US but also an Okinawa resident, Effie Schleyen, from Israel, and Hirohito Kirii-san from Tokyo traveled to South Africa from 1-10 June at the invitation of Arnold de Beer, a senior Gojuryu Karate Instructor, and other senior instructors in his ISMAA Organization. They were also supported by students of Hennie de Vries, currently in Australia, who first introduced Kobudo to South Africa in his Dojo more that ten years ago. Other senior karate ka in the Johannesburg and Pretoria area, including senior members of Stan Schmidt’s SA JKA Hombu, supported the trip and joined the training.

This trip represents a significant next step for advancing Kobudo in the region. Nearly 200 persons joined the training, building on groundwork laid by Hennie, Emile and Penny, and many students of Uehara Koh Sensei who had learned some Kobudo from him while visiting Okinawa in the past. The number of instructors who made the trip allowed everyone an opportunity to train at their own level. Kuniyoshi Sensei divided the participants into various groups and spread his attention across the various training sessions - be that preparation for Dan Testing or an initial introduction.

Key participants included Stephan Coetzee, Steff Biagioni, Jannie le Grange, Richard Buckley, Jorge Pinto, Andre Loubser, Tonie de Beer, and Arina. Training was moved from Dojo to Dojo to give the area maximum exposure, on the first official visit by a Shihan graded instructor. All instructors and students were very pleased with the effort and talent shown from all involved.

The children who participated were especially pleased with the opportunity to learn from an Okinawan Sensei, and to experience new weapons. Ever popular, the Nunchaku was a delight to the kids as they were taught simple effective training drills.

The hospitality provided by our hosts was world class as they invited us into their homes during our stay. They also arranged a braai ,or cook out at Stephan Coetzee's home, with a fantastic spread including two full sized BBQ spits, one containing a whole lamb and the other a whole pig. We culminated the trip with a weekend retreat and testing session that saw the following persons promoted as per list below.
